Greenback Recovery: Black Canyon Creek Beaver Dam Project

Thank you for your interest in helping to support Greenback recovery in Colorado! The Black Canyon Creek/Rock Creek Complex is a critical component of Greenback Cutthroat recovery in Colorado and is currently in the “treatment/preparation” phase. These projects are an important step to getting the area ready for Greenback reintroduction and we need your help!

Project Description: Volunteers are needed to help remove beaver dams from Black Canyon Creek. The dams will be temporarily removed to ease the non-native Brook Trout removal from Black Canyon Creek in August 2019.  Volunteers will be hiking approximately 1 mile uphill to the dams, wading through beaver ponds, and manually removing the dams with hand tools (shovels, crowbars, pickaxes, etc.).  Colorado Parks and Wildlife will supply hand tools for volunteers.  Volunteers should bring disinfected waders, water, lunch, sunscreen, rain jacket, and a change of clothes.  Volunteers that do not have disinfected waders should contact Tyler Swarr (tyler.swarr@state.co.us) at least two weeks beforehand to borrow CPW waders.  This project is rated Strenuous.

Project Date and Time: Thursday July 18, 2019 from 8:00am to 3:00pm (at the latest). Volunteers will meet at the Jefferson Store in Jefferson Colorado at 8:00 am and follow CPW to the site (PLEASE CARPOOL).

Project Location: Black Canyon Creek, South Park, CO.  Volunteers will meet at the Jefferson Market in Jefferson, CO at 8:00 am.

What to Bring: Please bring your own lunch, water, layers, backpack, and boots/waders (see notes above regarding wader decontamination).
